When I first heard about the Youth Peace Network in November I almost deleted the email. But something caught my attention...maybe it was the word "international" maybe it was "camp setting". Whatever the reason I decided to explore further. And this is what I learned...
The Youth Peace Network was created by the YMCA in Vancouver, Canada for young emerging leaders in YMCAs all over the world to foster leadership skills, build cultural competencies, and increase regional and international networks of Y staff and volunteers. This is made on a belief in the empowerment of youth and their capacity to create change.
The Youth Peace Network (YPN) takes place in Vancouver, Canada over the summer and offers the following opportunities for participants:
-3 weeks of trainings and workshops
-1 week of resident camp counselor training
-7 weeks volunteering as a counselor at YMCA summer camp as Global Educaton facilitator
-1 week of meetings with local NGOs
-2 weeks of program debriefing and wrap up
1 participant is selected from the entire YMCA of the USA to repreresent the United States in this endeavor. I am humbled and honored to be the US representative for the 2011 YPN. I am eager for the opportunities this experience will provide for me and the YMCA of Greater Indianapolis.
I will be keeping track of my experience through this blog and invite you all to follow me during my journey. Thank you for all your support and see you in September!
